My little sister is 11 and she likes to come into my room a lot and hang out with me, but sometimes when she comes in I’m in an introverted or depressed mood and don’t want to talk to anyone. Tonight she came in and said that my room was too quiet, so I told her to go listen to music or something because I didn’t really feel like talking. She sat there quietly for a couple of seconds and then she said, “I’m gonna tell you what happened in gym class today because it was really annoying, but you don’t have to talk back.” And she just started talking about her day to me and I don’t think enough people understand how helpful that is to someone who’s depressed. To be there with them and talk to them without expecting them to engage in conversation. It’s a way to be alone without feeling completely lonely and I think everyone who deals with depression or any other mental illness needs someone like my sister to understand that, and to interact with the people they care about based on their state of mind.

Because hundreds of thousands of people have already paid for their tuition. Should they be reimbursed? It’s not fair to the people who have already paid/ are paying for college. That’s why.

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who say “I suffered, why shouldn’t they?” And those who say “No one should have to suffer like I did.”

Ok guys, I agree with you completely. The obvious answer is that we should make college free. College is outrageously expensive, and making it free would allow everyone access without forcing anyone into debt.
But there’s a presumption backing this “obvious” answer, and the presumption is that college is necessary. It would be perfectly reasonable in a context where the thing involved (i.e., food, clean water, etc.) is a basic human need, but college is not. Besides the excessively high monetary cost, there’s also a high high opportunity cost. It takes four whole years out of your life. And for what? The coursework isn’t applicable to the real world, and a degree is not a good way to get a job. College is not the only path to success, and for many people, it’s not even a very good one. It just puts you in a ton of debt for no good reason.
But even if college isn’t necessary, what harm would it do for college to be free for those who want to attend? After all, debt is crippling the nation’s youth, and wouldn’t it be nice if that went away? Of course only a stingy old fart who doesn’t think young people “deserve” an education would say free college is bad, right?
To answer these questions, let me skip back in time and tell you a story. It is 1920. The uppermost level of compulsory education isn’t 12th grade, it is 8th. High school as we know it now does not exist; in its place sits something that looks more like college did recently: an elite, expensive program which only accepts the top 5% of applicants. Because high schools only accept the very best, those who graduate are almost guaranteed high-paying jobs.
This changed in 1954. Some guys saw all the high school graduates getting great jobs and had a bright idea. If we make high school free, they thought, then everyone will be able to get a high school education, and thus, a great job!
The problem was that the only reason high school graduates had gotten great jobs was because of the rarity, not the quality, of their education. And over the next fifty years, as high school was made free and subsequently mandatory, a high school education became completely useless. The only thing gained was four more years of compulsory schooling before children, now more properly young adults, could begin working.
This has already happened before! This whole argument and discussion, “should we take this elite program and make it free”, “of course we should because it’ll give everyone good jobs”, it’s happened before! It will be just as ineffective this time as it was last time, because nothing has changed. Post hoc ergo propter hoc is still a logical fallacy, and people are still making it. In the exact same way as before. Those who fail to learn from history are, as they say, doomed to repeat it.
Now let me present a possible vision of the future. It is 2056. College has been made free and mandatory, and the little value it still had has been completely erased. The only thing gained has been four more years of compulsory schooling before young adults, now more properly adults, can begin working. The societal definition of “child” goes from “under 18” to “under 24”. The average human lifespan doesn’t change, it simply becomes normal that humans spend the first full quarter of their lives in the artificial school environment, which is just as pointless as ever: the students care as little about learning as the teachers care about teaching, nobody gets paid enough, and everyone is miserable. One day, a 24-year-old kid reads an article which says people are trying to make graduate school free, and she thinks, “Huh. That seems like a good idea. Then, everyone could have a good education for free.”
In writing this, I don’t want to cast my ballot on this issue as “the system is fine the way it is”, because the system is not fine. This post and the responses to it demonstrate as much. But the way to fix it is not to commit the same logical fallacy that we already made less than a century ago. The problem is complicated, and a complicated problem cannot be fixed with a three-word solution. “Make college free” is not the answer.
I hope I can open a discussion on the real answer. It will have to contain a solution to the college debt crisis. It will have to take into account the fact that our current public school system was designed to churn out good factory workers, despite the fact that we now need entrepreneurs instead. Preferably, it should contain a solution to the public school system’s current problem of not teaching important skills (how to pay taxes, what laws exist and how to change them, etc), but I know better than to get my hopes up. I’ll settle for just finding a way to teach skills that are legitimately important for purposes of starting a career. But even if I can do none of that, I hope that it at least made you consider this debate in a different light.
Make college cheaper, then, if it being free would cause a problem. (OR MAYBE WE CAN RETURN TO THE TIME WHERE HOMES DIDNT COST SO DAMN MUCH AND WHEN THE ECONOMY DIDNT SUCK ASS???)

This post is like getting punched repeatidly, but from a different angle each time
Recently, I left a position at my previous job to take up something more seasonal, but pays well. My intention behind this is it would help me make enough to be able to move, essentially, across the country by the end of January. This job came through a temp agency, and while they did communicate information to me about the position, there was a misunderstanding on the details and the needs of the position.
However, regardless on whether or not they provided enough for me to understand just what I was agreeing to, or if I just entirely ignorant- the job did not meet my needs, and what I could handle. It was essentially a warehousing position, standing in one spot for 10 hours.
So, I did leave this job and have been consistently and rapidly applying to as many jobs as I have been able to. I have been applying to stuff I am well overqualified, under-qualified for, and everything in between. Although, I have mainly been doing temporary shifts to make up wages until I could get a call about another job.
I have also been applying to many jobs down in the state that I intend to move to.
As of now, I am going to an interview on Tuesday for a part-time barista position, and I will also spend majority of today and Monday (November 18th & 19th) visiting businesses in person to try to find work as well. However, these are not guaranteed, and every day I am not working, I am losing money.
Now, with the temporary work, I could have made up my wages despite the number of hours I’d have to work (upwards towards 45-50, compared to the 38-40 I’d usually need). However, on my way to another shift this morning, I realized my car was making worse noises than it has recently (the diagnostics I got on it were something like needing new shocks/struts, and all tires replaced). While it isn’t an immediate, absolute necessity to fix and could go a while, I have put off getting my car repaired for over a month purely from not having the money to pay the mechanics.
I did cancel my shift last minute out of concern, and because of a previous issue I had with a shift and cancelled last minute (less than a month ago), I was put on a week suspension, which means I have no access to the shifts I had lined up for the next 7 days.
I cannot, cannot, CANNOT do this. I do NOT have anyone who can help me or lend me money. Previously, I’ve asked my family, but because of tensions with everyone and their financial hardships as well, I have no options.
I am doing my best to find work as fast as I can, but I have no guarantee how fast that’ll come. I do get paid this Friday from my last full-time job (I estimate MAXIMUM of $350, if even that; $120-150 MAX from the temp agency job and $90-110 MAX from the temporary shift jobs I managed to do last week)
However, I have no way of knowing if I’m right until that money comes in. And regardless, I don’t know if that’ll be enough to cover my bills or my food.
I also recently applied for an airport position that I feel FAIRLY confident I’ll get and pays very well with incentives and shift differentials, but because it’s an airport, I had to get fingerprinting and detailed background tests. I was told not to expect anything back until late next week, or the week of the 26th.
So, no matter what, I am fucked for an entire week. And I don’t know what do other than what I am. I am going to try to reach out to the community manager to see if I can get the suspension lifted from that temporary work, but I don’t expect it to be.
In the meantime, I’ll do what I can to apply to places and go in person. But, please, if you could spare ANYTHING, please consider either tipping my writing or helping me out!
Ideally, I would need around $600 (what I typically make in a paycheck) to guarantee that all of my bills are paid and I don’t create any issues with my landlord and roommate. However, that also leaves it incredibly questionable on if I’ll be able to afford necessities or groceries.
Groceries tend to run me about $40-60, because I ration out food for two weeks and… I just honestly can’t afford to eat a ton. At best, I manage two meals a day. But, I also have to pay for prescriptions and certain vitamins (iron, b12, vit-d) because of deficiencies.
I do not expect to get anywhere near $600, but I do need to have enough for groceries, the electric/internet, and the car insurance ($40-60 groceries; $95-105 electric/internet; $125 car insurance) I am hoping that I’ll have a job by the middle of this week to make sure the beginning month expenses are covered on my part.
If nothing else, please at least consider helping me with my groceries so I can eat lmao.
If I manage to find something before the middle of the week, I’ll make sure to remove this post from my blog.

BAD SITUATION WORSE [11/20/18]
So, I went to an interview today and I thought I had the job. I was pretty sure I had the job until after I left and received an email from the HR woman I spoke to that they could not hire me until my tenure is met through the temporary work.
Unfortunately, due to my suspension from that work, I’m not sure how long that’ll be. It’s something I’m going to be in contact with the office tomorrow about.
I have applied to several more jobs, and I’m hoping to get some more interviews lined up. I have also contacted the recruitment for that airport position and am expecting a follow up on the background check and everything else.
However, it is looking like I am not going to get any more follow ups or shifts until next Monday, at least.
This puts me in a worse position.
