You ever as an author want to choke somebody when someone critiquing your story is like “Did you realize a b and c were there?” and you’re like “I did a b and c on purpose! That’s actually the point! It’s really important to the story actually!”
*bangs head on the desk repeatedly*
Fellow student: I didn’t like that the word “they” was used so much. It was distracting.
Me: *eye twitching slightly* The main character is genderless.
Other student: The ending was super unclear. Was he imagining this stuff or was it real?
Me: *taking deep breaths* That was on purpose. This was literally a story about uncertainty within the human mind. The ending is like that on purpose.
Yet another fellow student: Why was the hair brought up so much?
Me: It’s symbolism, Susan.
“The character, the f*ck, is they”
