Summary: Roman tells his mother that he’s already dating someone to avoid getting set up with the family friend. He asks Patton to pretend to be his boyfriend, but he soon realises that he doesn’t want to just pretend. (Prompted by @kikirwheeler)
Roman chewed his lip as he watched his relatives laugh at a joke Patton had told. As corny as it sounded, the sun lit up Patton’s hazel eyes and turned them into a honey-gold when he threw his head back to laugh too, a euphoric chuckle breaking from Patton’s lips.
Roman’s gaze was broken when an aunt waved him over.
“Roman, why didn’t you introduce us to your boyfriend sooner?” She asked. “He’s such a delight!”
“Aw, Aunt Lauren, you’re too kind!” Patton blushed.
Roman’s breath caught in his throat when he saw the way light pink dusted his cheeks, highlighting Patton’s freckles.
He couldn’t tear his eyes away as he finally answered his aunt’s question. “I guess I didn’t realise how amazing he was before recently.”
Patton looked up and shot a warm smile at him.
To tell the truth, Roman and Patton weren’t dating in the slightest. A few months ago, Roman had come out to his parents, and although supportive, his mum kept trying to set him up with any gay son her friends had.
She was determined to get him with some family friend who was going to be at the annual Prince Thanksgiving-Christmas getaway. Roman, in the heat of the moment, had blurted out that he already had a boyfriend, and his mum demanded he bring him along.
So Roman had asked Patton to pretend to be his boyfriend, and a week into the vacation he had been struck with the realisation that he had feelings for him.
Now Roman was stuck with Patton acting as if he loved him for one more week, and then they’d revert back to being just friends. As the holiday drew to a close, he couldn’t help but dread the end more and more.
“Roman?” Patton touched Roman’s arm gently, then led him inside where there were less eavesdropping relatives. “Are you alright?”
Roman hated that he was worrying Patton, but at the same time, he couldn’t lie to him.
“Look, Patton, the thing is…” Roman paused and dropped eye contact. He didn’t want to look at his friend when Patton inevitably rejected him. “When I first asked you to pretend to be my boyfriend, I didn’t know that I liked you. However, ever since we’ve been pretending to be lovers, I can’t stop looking at you. I like you a lot, Pat, and I can’t bear to watch you pretend to like me too.”
“Oh, Roman.” Patton’s voice was laden with sadness, and Roman took a deep breath in, biting his lip to hide his hurt. “You thought I was pretending?”
At that, Roman looked up. Patton was smiling at him again as he took a step closer, and Roman froze as he reached up to cup his face. Without a second thought, they both leant in, and then they were kissing.
When they pulled apart, Roman’s face softened, entirely sure that he was shooting Patton the most lovesick look, but he didn’t care then. Instead, he asked softly, “Patton, will you stop being my pretend-boyfriend?”
Patton laughed. “Roman Prince, I would love to be your boyfriend,” he whispered, before leaning in for another kiss.
